Party of two? Not to worry. While most drinking games are designed for groups, there’s plenty that can be played by a pair.

After all, everyone loves a fun drinking game and it’s a great way to inject a dose of entertainment into the evening.

Here’s a selection of fun drinking games that work well played between two. And the good news is that for many of them you don’t need any props – just the two of you and your alcohol of choice.

Seeing the popularity of such games, many drinking game apps has been developed for phone to enjoy with friends at your next house party.

14 Drinking Games for 2 Persons

1. Two Truths and a Lie

On Sale These Cards Will Get You Drunk

Still getting to know each other? Then Two Truths and a Lie may be the perfect game for the pair of you. If, on the other hand, you’ve been best pals for years or have been in a relationship for a long time, you may want to choose one of the other games on the list.

This game is most fun when you don’t know everything about the other person. And the big plus is that you don’t need any props or cards to play.

Begin with one person listing two facts that are true about themselves and one lie. The order of the statements isn’t important, and that person must list the statements confidently as if they’re all true.

Then, the other player must guess which statements are true and which isn’t. If they guess correctly, then the person listing must drink. However, if they guess wrong, they must drink.

The other player will then have a go, and so on. Play the game either with mixed drinks or beer or by taking shots – it all depends on how tipsy you’d like to get.

Try to pick interesting and unique facts that the other person wouldn’t know of. For the lie, choose something that could be quite believable. That’s the formula for winning Two Truths and a Lie.

2. Higher or Lower

Premium Prism Playing Cards

If you’re looking for a quick and simple game, then Higher or Lower is a great shout. Plus, all that’s required is a deck of cards, or you could even use a card deck app on a phone.

The dealer places down a card taken from the top of the deck. Then the second player guesses whether the next card is higher or lower than the card placed down.

As you may have guessed if the second player is correct, the dealer drinks. However, if the second player is wrong, it’s time for them to drink.

3. Never Have I Ever

On Sale Never Have I Ever Classic Edition Card Game Set

Never Have I Ever is perhaps one of the most popular drinking games out there, and you may already be familiar with it. While the game is usually played in a group, it’s also fun to play it between two.

Like Two Truths and a Lie, Never Have I Ever is best played between two people who don’t already know everything about one another. After all, the goal is to discover as many secrets as you can.

To begin, one person notes something that they’ve never done in their life. It can be as tame or as wild as you like, depending on the tone. However, generally to make the game more interesting people tend to list things that are quite crazy or suggestive. For example, you can say something like ‘never have I ever been skinny dipping’ or ‘never have I ever been arrested’.

The other person will then have to drink if they have done it. If they haven’t, they don’t drink. Then they will then take their go, and so on.

4. Flip Cup

Flip Cup is another game that’s usually played in a group, but it can also be played with two individuals. You’ll also need to plan the right props – you’ll need alcohol, two plastic cups, and a table.

Traditionally the game is played with beer, but you can tailor the game to suit your tastes.

Fill two plastic cups with beer or another alcoholic beverage and place them on opposite sides of the table. The two players then stand on these opposite sides of the table, next to their cups.

To start, both players need to grab their cups and chug the alcohol inside as quick as possible. When the drink is consumed, each cup must be placed upside down on the table, with a small part of the cup over the edge of it. From where the cup is hanging over the edge of the table, players must attempt to flick the cup over aiming for it to land on the table the right side up.

Each time a player fails, they must place the cup back in the same position to try again. Both players must keep going until there’s a winner.

While the game is simple, it’s very exhilarating and exciting and you’ll find your heart racing as you hope to land your cup the right way up.

Here’s an overview of flip cup and it’s newer offshoot, slap cup.

5. I’m Going on a Picnic

Buzzed - The Summer Drinking Game

I’m Going on a Picnic is a memory game that only requires alcohol and your imagination.

To start, players must go through the alphabet naming items to bring on a picnic. Each time a new item must be added.

For example, player one may say ‘I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing almonds. Then, player two may say ‘I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing almonds and berries. The game will carry on until someone makes a mistake or forgets one of the items.

The game gets progressively funnier the drunker and father down the alphabet the players get, with sillier items being listed. You may get into a debate as to why anyone would bring a xylophone or a zebra to a picnic.

6. Truth or Dare

Truth or Dare is another classic drinking drink that most people are familiar with. Like many of the other games on the list, playing Truth or Dare is a great way to get to know the other person in more depth – or to test their limits. And all you need to play is alcohol.

To start, player one will ask player two ‘truth or dare?’. Player two will then choose whether they’d like to be asked a question or to be challenged to a dare. Player one will then ask a question or suggest a dare.

If player two refuses to answer or play the dare, they must drink. If they go ahead, player one must drink. Then, the players will take it in turns and so on.

7. Quarters

Quarters another simple game and you’ll need alcohol, cups, and quarters to play.

To play, take it in turns to bounce quarters off the table with the aim for it to land into a cup of alcohol. If a player gets a quarter in, then the other person must drink whatever is in the cup. This is a great opportunity to get creative with alcohol in the drinks, and you can mix up concoctions or use alternating alcohol.

Alternatively, you can use separate cups to drink from and use empty cups to bounce the quarters if you don’t fancy drinking alcohol that’s had coins sitting in them.

Read our full guide on how to play quarters.

8. Power Hour

These Cards Will Get You Drunk Too

If both your aims are to get as drunk as possible, then Power Hour may be the game for you both. The aim of the game is to drink one shot of beer every minute for sixty minutes, equal to sixty shots of beer within an hour.

The player is the one that reaches the end. However, prepare yourself for a hangover the following day.

9. Speed Facts

On Sale Never Have I Ever Classic Edition Card Game Set

If you and your drinking partner know each other well, Speed Facts is a fun game to play. If you’ve just met, however, then it may be a little difficult and awkward as the aim is to prove how much you know about one another.

Players must go back and forth noting true facts about their partner. Each time a player gets three statements wrong, they must take a drink.

You may feel all warm and fuzzy realizing how much your partner knows about you – or the opposite.

10. Drunk Bullshit

Most card players know Bullshit, and the game can be made even more fun with alcohol – even for two people. Players must take it in turns going through their deck of cards, placing down all the 2s, 3s, 4s and so on that they have until they’re all out and have to lie about the cards being placed down.

If the other player calls out ‘Bullshit’ and catches the player in a lie, the bullshitter takes a drink. If they’re wrong, they must be the one to take a drink.

11. Mind Meld

No products found.

Mind Meld is the perfect game for two players, as it would get complicated with anymore.

The two partners must look at one another, count down from three, and then announce a word. The idea is that both players will then say another word based on what the two words combined makes them think of.

For example, one person could say ‘John Lennon’ and the other could say ‘band’ and the word the two have in common is ‘The Beatles’. As you can imagine, the game can get a bit messy, and very funny.

Every time the words don’t match, both players must take a drink.

If you do want to play with more than two people, you could take it in turns with two players at a time otherwise it may prove to be too overwhelming with more than two people guessing at once.

This video gives you an idea of how to play, although it’s intended as an improv warm-up exercise.

12. Match

Bicycle Dice

Match is another simple card game, requiring one dice and two sets of playing cards.

Players must shuffle each pack, with each player receiving a deck of cards. Players take it in turns to roll the dice, then whatever number is displayed on the dice is the number that the players must race to discover in their pack of cards.

Whoever matches the right card to the dice first is the winner of the round, and the loser must take a drink.

13. TV Show Drinking Game

WHAT DO YOU MEME? Core Game

Do you and your partner share a favorite TV show? Then make watching it even better by involving alcohol. All that’s required is a pen, paper, drinks, and, of course, a TV.

First, players must put their heads together to write a list of quotes or themes that commonly pop up in this TV show. For example, maybe one of the characters has a habit of flirting with the ladies?

Once a healthy list is completed, it’s time to pop on the TV show. When any of the common actions or quotes come up in the show, both players must drink together. This is a great idea for a relaxing game that doesn’t take too much effort, plus it’s easy to bond over a TV show that both players enjoy watching.

14. Pinky Mcdrinky

On Sale Gamewright Qwixx

For Pinky Mcdrinky, players will need one pink dice and two white dice. Players take turns rolling the pink dice, then each player will roll one of the white dices.

If one player’s dice matches the number of the pink dice, then the other player must drink. If nobody’s dice matches the number on the pink dice, then it must be rolled again. Or, for an extra dose of fun, you could adjust the rules so that both players must drink if neither matches the pink dice.

Which of These Two-Player Drinking Games Will You Play?

Whether you and your partner have known each other since high school or whether you’ve just met and are hoping to break the ice, there will be a suitable drinking game on this list to keep you entertained.

While drinking games are usually known to be a group activity, with two people it can be just as fun, or even more so with the right game.

Learn these standard King’s Cup rules for your next party.

King’s Cup, also known as Ring of Fire, Circle of Death, and Waterfall, has been a classic drinking game for years, and for a good reason.

It’s a great icebreaker for a group that doesn’t know each other well but it’s also just as fun for tight-knit friends too.

It gets those who participate in it a nice level of drunk and helps the group learn a little about each other’s wild sides.

Over the years many of the rules and methods of playing king’s cup have shifted, but we’ll go through the classic way of playing.

These are the king’s cup rules that most people will know and recognize, even if they’ve played a slightly different version previously.

Plus, you can’t go wrong playing the traditional version – it always guarantees a fun time. But we also provide some alternate rules and variations when you want to mix things up.

How to Set Up King’s Cup?

Setting up king’s cup is pretty easy. When it comes to equipment, all you need is:

  • A deck of cards
  • A cup
  • Alcohol
  • Willing participants

To set up the game, evenly spread a deck of cards face down around the cup.

All cards much touch the cards on either side, creating a ‘chain’ of cards.

Then, any number of players can gather around the cup, ready to play. This game works well with a larger group.

Other classic drinking games to learn:

Essential King’s Cup Rules

The basic rules for any game of King’s Cup, whether it’s known as Ring of Fire, Circle of Death, Waterfall or just “Kings”, are essentially the same.

To play king’s cup, players must take turns picking cards, going around the circle clockwise.

Each card in the deck corresponds to a specific action, which we’ll go through in the next section.

If you break the chain of cards, you must chug whatever drink is in the king’s cup in the center – we’ll get to that a bit later.

As the concoction of alcohol in the king’s cup may be a very unpleasant mixture, one of the main aims of the game is to avoid breaking the chain!

But even if you do break the chain, this doesn’t end the game.

King’s cup only finishes once all the cards are used up.

Now let’s get onto the fun part – the king’s cup rules of the cards (scroll down for full explanations and variations)

King's Cup Rules Infographic

Ace = Waterfall

This is one of the universal king’s cup rules. If you pick up an Ace it equals ‘waterfall’.

This starts with everyone chugging whatever drink they have – whether that’s beer, wine, or a spirit and mixer.

The person who picked the card has full control of the round and can stop drinking whenever he or she chooses.

Once they’ve stopped drinking, the next person clockwise to them can choose when to stop, and so on. So you must always wait until the person to your left has stopped before you can stop.

As you can imagine, the last person to stop drinking can end up getting pretty plastered! This rule also gives great opportunity to poke fun at those who can’t handle chugging their alcohol.

Two = You

Two is fairly simple and is the classic ‘you’.

This means you can pick one person to take two drinks, or two people to each take one drink.

Three = Me

Another easy one.

Three is ‘me’, which means you must chug two fingers of your own drink.

Four = Whores

The four card involves the ladies by telling them they are ‘whores’ and they all must drink. Not one of my favorites among the traditional king’s cup rules, so here’s a variation:

Alternate Rule = Give 2, Take 2

If you get a 4, give out 2 drinks and take 2 drinks.

Five = Bust a Jive

Here’s a fun one. Five is ‘bust a jive’, meaning the person that picks up the card must break a dance move. The next person must then copy the dance move and add an extra spin to it. This carries on until someone messes up the dance and has to drink.

Drunken uncoordinated dancers, what’s not to love?

Six = Dicks

Six is ‘dicks’, so all the guys in the game must drink. Again, let’s offer up an alternate version here.

Alternate Rule = Thumbs Down

If you get a 6, it’s Thumbs Down. This means you put your thumb on the table and the last person to do so drinks.

Seven = Heaven

Meaning, when the person who picked the card is ready, they must reach for the sky with both arms, with the rest of the players following suit.

The last person to reach must drink.

This is a great card to catch people out who aren’t paying attention, especially if the picker doesn’t use the card immediately.

Alternate Rule = Hell

Feeling a little less virtuous? You can also point down to the floor, and the last person to do it drinks.

Eight = Mate

Eight is ‘mate’. That means the player can choose anyone in the game to partner up with them, meaning when one of them drinks, they both must.

It’s the perfect way to show your crush that you’re interested in them or just to try to pick on someone to get them drunk.

Nine = Bust a Rhyme

Nine is ‘bust a rhyme’ and depending on how creative the group is, this card can be a lot of fun.

The idea is that the player who picked the card must say a word, and everybody goes around the circle saying a word that rhymes with it.

For example, a super-simple word would be ‘tall’ and other players could say ‘mall’, ‘wall’, or ‘call’.

This goes on until somebody can’t think of a new word, or until someone repeats a word. Then, as you guessed, they must drink!

Alternate Rule: Truth or Dare

Some players like to add this one into the mix instead. Challenge someone to truth or dare. If they decline, they  must drink.

Ten = Categories

Here’s another creative card. Ten is ‘categories’ meaning the player who chose the card must pick a category. Then each player must choose something that fits into that category.

For example, the player who picked up the card may choose ‘types of fruit’ and the rest of the players will have to pick fruit, such as a lemon or strawberry.

Whoever can’t think of anything or makes a repeat must down two fingers of drink.

Jack = Never Have I Ever

Jack is arguably one of the most exciting cards to pick as it allows you to learn some of the sordid secrets of the players.

Jack represents the game ‘never have I ever’ and after picking up the card the group must play one round.

If you’re not aware of ‘never have I ever’, the game starts with everyone putting up five fingers.

Then the person who picked the card announces something they haven’t done. If you have done it, you must put a finger down.

Then the next person will state something they haven’t done, and so on. The first person to have five fingers down must chug two fingers of their drink.

The ‘never have I ever’ statements can be as racy or as tame as you like, but, of course, it’s more fun to choose something juicy.

It’s a great way to get to know people better, call out friends on their ridiculous tales, and dig deeper into people’s secrets.

Alternate Rule 1 = Guys Drink

If the Never Have I Ever rule is too tedious, you could also just make the guys drink on this one, especially if you opted to do something different with rule 6.

Alternate Rule 2 = Make a Rule

You get to make a rule for the game (example below), and if anyone breaks it , they drink.

Queen

Queen is ‘question master’ and whoever picks up the card takes on that role. That means that if any of the other players answer a question asked by the question master, they must drink.

It’s a great way to get creative and try to trick people out without them realizing. For example, the question master can direct a question to a player and ask, ‘is it your go yet?’.

The question master will remain question master until someone else picks up a queen, then they will take the crown.

Alternate Rule 1 = Girls Drink

Instead of the traditional rule 4, here’s a better way to say now all the Queens (ladies) get to drink.

Alternate Rule 2 = Queasy Creation

If you pull a Red Queen, you can combine any three drinks from the table into one shot; then pick someone to take it.

King = Make a Rule (and pour some booze in the middle cup)

Finally, we get to the king! The player who picks a king has the power to make a rule for the game.

This can be anything relating to the game and if it’s broken, that player must drink.

If you’re stuck, one popular rule is ‘no first names’.

That means anyone who uses anyone’s first name must drink.

As you can imagine, this is an easy one to forget, especially when everyone’s a bit tipsy.

Another part of this rule is that whoever picks up a king must pour some of their drink into the king’s cup in the center.

The last person to pick up a king is the unlucky one who must chug whatever mixture of alcohol is left in the center cup!

Usually, it will be a blend of three different types of alcohol and isn’t pleasant to drink, making it all the more fun to watch.

    Ready to Play King’s Cup?

While king’s cup is a fairly complex game to pick up – especially when the players are intoxicated – it’s definitely one that isn’t boring and gets everyone involved.

After a round or two, it’s easy to start remembering the King’s Cup rules.

Once you get more used to the game, feel free to tailor and shift the rules to suit your group. Have fun!

Sick of playing King’s Cup every time you have a social gathering with friends? Thankfully King’s Cup isn’t the only drinking game you can play with a large group. Enter Ride the Bus.

Ride the Bus is a fun drinking game that involves a combination of luck and logic to avoid becoming the unlucky player that must ‘ride the bus’ at the end of the game.

While the rules may sound overwhelming on paper, once the game gets going it’s very easy to pick up and people can watch and learn as the game progresses.

Also Read: 6 Fun Halloween Drinking Games to Enjoy with Friends

To play Ride the Bus all you need is a driver (dealer), a rider (we’ll get to that later), a pack of cards, and plenty of booze. While you only need a minimum of two people, of course, the more the merrier.

Ready to ride the bus? Here are the drinking game rules.

How to Set up Ride The Bus?

    Ride the Bus Rules

Setting up Ride the Bus is simple. All you need is:

    • A deck of cards
    • Alcohol

One player is assigned as the dealer with the randomly shuffled deck of cards. This player is usually the person that’s most familiar with the game, so they can explain the steps to everyone else as the game progresses.

Players should sit in a circle or around the table, and everyone should have their booze of choice at the ready.

How to Play Ride the Bus?

There will be four rounds which will determine the unfortunate player that must ‘ride the bus’. Then that person will have to ride the bus – which can sometimes end up with them becoming very drunk indeed!

    First Round

The dealer starts on his or her left and asks everyone the first question – ‘Red or Black?’

The dealer will then place the first card in front of each player. If the player is correct, that person can distribute a drink. If incorrect, that person must take a drink.

This continues until everyone has received their first card and has either distributed or taken a drink.

    Second Round

In the second round, there’s a new question to ask the gang – ‘Higher or Lower?’

With ace being high and two being low, players must guess if the next card is higher or lower in value than their first card. For some, the answer will be simple but for others, it takes some guesswork.

If the player is correct, that person can distribute a drink. If they’re wrong, that person must take a drink.

Got an identical card? Bad luck, that’s an automatic penalty and you must drink!

    Third Round

The third round poses the question – ‘In between or outside?’ and players must guess if the next card fits between the value of their first two cards or outside.

For example, if a player has a King and a Jack, they would likely guess ‘outside’ as the only ‘inside’ cards would be a Jack, Queen, or a King. If the player is correct, then they can deliver a drink to an individual of their choice. If wrong, it’s time for another drink!

If you have two identical cards, then your luck has changed. If you claim outside, you’ll automatically win, unless you’re super unlucky and receive a third identical card. In that case, it’s time to drink again.

    Final Round

In the final round, the dealer will ask players to guess a suit – so either spade, club, heart, or diamond.

Correct guesses reward that player with five drinks to distribute to any players (or player) of their choice. Incorrect answers are penalized with one drink.

Now it’s time for players to collect their four distributed cards. Then, the dealer creates a face down pyramid containing five cards at the base, then four, three, two, and one.

Now it’s time to go hard. Drink values are allocated to each horizontal row in the pyramid. For example, the bottom row of five cards is equal to two drinks.

The second row of four cards is equal to four drinks. The third row of three cards is equal to eight drinks. The fourth row of two cards is equal to 16 drinks.

Finally, the fifth row of one card is equal to a shot of liquor, agreed upon by all players. Yum!

However, depending on the group preferences, you can determine your row values.

Starting at the bottom row of five, a card is turned over at a time. Any player who has the matching card places their card onto the pyramid and can distribute the row’s allocated number of drinks to whomever they wish. If more than one person has that card, that’s fine – multiple cards can be laid down.

For example, if the first card on the bottom row is a Jack and I have a Jack in my hand, I can distribute two drinks to whomever I choose.

This continues all the way up the pyramid, and the aim is to get rid of as many cards as possible.

Players can take a risk and save their cards in the hopes of getting a matching card higher up, so they can distribute more drinks (and get their friends drunk

However, this idea has its risks as the player with the most cards as the end of the pyramid will have to face the ultimate sacrifice – riding the bus.

    Riding the Bus

Once you’ve determined your loser with the most cards left at the top of the pyramid, that individual must take a ride on the bus.

If there are players with a matching number of cards, a high-card tiebreaker must be played. The player with the highest card must hop on the bus, and if the cards match, the next card is used as the tiebreaker.

The player who’s lucky enough to ride the bus now must complete all the questions asked at the beginning of the game in a row! These include ‘Red or Black?’, ‘Higher or Lower?’, ‘In between or Outside?’, and ‘Suit?’.

Sounds easy enough, huh? Not really. As any failure at any stage means the player must start right back at the beginning at question one.

The game doesn’t stop until the player manages to answer the four questions correctly in a row or the entire deck is used. As you can imagine, this usually ends up with one person in the game becoming completely plastered and it can be pretty hilarious to watch.

Ready to Play Ride the Bus?

Ride the Bus is a fun drinking game that’s a great icebreaker for a large (or small) group. As always, please drink responsibly! Ride the Bus isn’t intended to make players sick with the over-consumption of booze.

If the player riding the bus, in particular, appears to be too drunk, it may be time to stop the game. Don’t continue playing until they’re too wasted to stand!
